They all leaned in. “What the hell is it?” Captain Morley asked after a moment.

“It looks like a Roman numeral.” Jake squinted at it. “What’s the D stand for?”

“Five hundred.” Kelly and Constance responded in unison.

“So…five hundred what? Five hundred girls?” Jake asked.

“Might have something to do with the address where he’s keeping Tiffany,” Kelly said as she straightened. “Captain Morley, if possible I’d like a complete listing of local buildings with the number five hundred in their address.”

“Sure,” he said uncertainly. “There’s probably a lot of them, though….”

“That’s not a problem, we have a support team coming in this afternoon.”

“You think he left a message saying where to find her?” Jake said doubtfully. “Seems a little strange. Why not just write a note?”

Kelly glanced at him. “You have another theory?”

“Nope, you’re the boss.”

She examined him closely. “You still don’t think Josh did it.”

“I didn’t say that.” Jake shook his head. “Honestly, I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

Kelly turned back to the captain. “Has forensics already been through here?”

He nodded. “Finished a while ago.”

“And the parents have been notified?”

Captain Morley nodded. “Just spoke to them. They’re driving down, said they’d be here late morning.”

Kelly nodded briskly and scanned the room with her eyes. “All right, then. Constance, why don’t you call in your people and get him out of here.”

Constance nodded briskly and left the room.

Kelly started sifting through one of the piles of papers stacked by the bed.

“What are you doing?” Jake asked.

“I have a search warrant, not that we need it anymore since this is a potential crime scene. So start looking for anything indicating where he might have taken her. Keep your eyes peeled for that symbol, or the number five hundred. Diaries, photographs, class notes.” She glanced up at him. “And let’s try to get it done before his parents show up.”

Jake waited a beat, gazing at Josh’s body, then shrugged. “I’ll start in the closet.”

“Great. When we finish up here we’ll look downstairs, then head out to his car.” As she worked, Kelly thought about what Josh had said in the interview the day before, and her own moment of doubt. Suicide was certainly the act of a guilty conscience, and the knife looked like a match. Had he already killed Tiffany in a final act of violence, then turned the knife on himself? Or was she stashed somewhere, drugged and helpless? Kelly set her jaw. Either way they had to find her, and soon.
